Caption: Latvian PM's Election Win Boosts Chances For Pro-Ukraine Coalition. Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs' United List has won the country's parliamentary election, strengthening his chances of remaining in power. With almost all votes counted, the centre-right party secured around 35%, more than 20 percentage points ahead of its nearest rival. Preliminary results put United List on course to win 42 of the 100 seats in Latvia's parliament, leaving it short of an outright majority. Kulbergs will need coalition partners, with the National Alliance and New Unity both clearing the 5% threshold and expected to return to parliament. Those results could allow Kulbergs to form another pro-Ukraine government without relying on Ainārs Šlesers' far-right Latvia First party. The election campaign was dominated by high inflation, problems at national airline airBaltic and migration pressure linked to Russia and Belarus. Kulbergs became prime minister in May after his predecessor Evika Siliņa resigned following a backlash over stray Ukrainian drone strikes. Kulbergs also recently opposed removing Russian billionaires Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from EU sanctions before Latvia ultimately abstained in a compromise.
