Caption: Conclave to Begin on 7 May to Elect New Pope. The Vatican has announced that the conclave to elect the next pope will start on 7 May inside the Sistine Chapel. Around 135 cardinals from across the globe will gather for the closed-door election, following Pope Francis' death. The previous two conclaves in 2005 and 2013 each lasted only two days, but no official timeline has been set for this one. The cardinals will attend a solemn mass at St. Peter's Basilica before moving to the Sistine Chapel for the secretive vote. Once inside, cardinals will have no communication with the outside world until a new pope is elected. Voting will take place up to four times a day, with a two-thirds majority needed to choose the new pope. If voting stretches past three days, a day of prayer may be called before proceeding further. Black smoke signals no decision, while white smoke indicates the election of a new pope. On Saturday, Pope Francis' funeral saw politicians, royalty, and 140,000 mourners gather in St. Peter's Square. Following the funeral, images of Pope Francis’s tomb at Santa Maria Maggiore were released, showing a tribute with a white rose.
