Caption: World’s Oldest Marathon Runner, Fauja Singh, Dies in Hit-and-Run at 114. Fauja Singh, the world’s oldest marathon runner, tragically passed away at 114 after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run accident near his village in Beas, Punjab, India. Known as the “Turbaned Tornado,” Singh gained fame for running marathons into his 90s, completing nine races despite starting his running career late in life. Born in 1911 in rural India, Singh moved to London, where he began running marathons at the age of 89, following the death of his wife and son. His accomplishments were never officially recognized by Guinness World Records due to the lack of a birth certificate, though he was celebrated globally for his feats. Singh’s personal best marathon time was five hours and 40 minutes, completed at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2003 at the age of 92. He made history in 2011 as the first centenarian to complete a marathon, finishing the Toronto marathon in over eight hours. Singh’s final race took place in 2013, where he ran a 10-kilometer route in Hong Kong before retiring from competitive running. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and many others expressed their sorrow, calling Singh an exceptional athlete and a symbol of perseverance. Police have arrested a 26-year-old suspect, identified through CCTV footage, in connection with the fatal hit-and-run incident.
