Caption: Libya’s Eastern Government Bars Entry of Italy, Malta, and Greece Ministers. Libya’s eastern-based government denied entry to ministers from Italy, Malta, and Greece, accusing them of disregarding Libya’s sovereignty. The ministers, including Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and Greece’s Migration Minister Thanos Plevris, were turned away upon arrival at Benghazi airport. The delegation had intended to meet with the eastern government of Osama Hamad, who is allied with Khalifa Haftar, after discussing the migration crisis with the rival Tripoli government. The Benghazi-based government declared the visiting officials persona non grata and instructed them to leave Libya immediately. Before the incident, the ministers met with the U.N.-recognised government of Abdulhamid Dbeibah in Tripoli to address the migration crisis. Libya’s eastern government had previously warned foreign visitors and diplomats to obtain prior approval before traveling within the country. Libya remains a key migration route to Europe, especially after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, with many migrants fleeing conflict and poverty. Dbeibah’s government is working on a national plan to address migration, focusing on cooperation with international partners.
