Caption: Harvard Settles Antisemitism Lawsuits, Pledges Reform Following Trump Inauguration. Harvard University settled two lawsuits alleging a failure to address antisemitism on campus, just one day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration. The lawsuits, filed by the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, Jewish Americans for Fairness in Education, and Students Against Antisemitism, accused Harvard of ignoring antisemitic harassment. As part of the settlement, Harvard will adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism for reviewing related complaints. Harvard will issue annual reports on its response to antisemitism, hire a dedicated point person for complaints, and implement antisemitism training for staff over the next five years. “Today’s settlement reflects Harvard’s commitment to ensuring Jewish students, faculty, and staff are respected and supported,” the university said in a statement. The lawsuits and settlement come after widespread criticism of Harvard’s response to antisemitism following the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and related campus protests. The Anti-Defamation League previously gave Harvard a failing grade for its policies to protect Jewish students, citing the university’s insufficient action against antisemitism. One lawsuit described Harvard as a “bastion of rampant anti-Jewish hatred,” while another accused the university of leaving “cruel anti-Semitic bullying” unaddressed. Brandeis Center founder Kenneth Marcus said the settlement could foster a more inclusive environment for Jewish students if fully implemented. Students Against Antisemitism praised Harvard’s leadership in combating antisemitism and fostering an inclusive campus culture.
