Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Apple Loses Smartphone Crown in China as Vivo and Huawei Surge Ahead

Caption: Apple fell to third in China’s smartphone market in 2024, with a 17% decline in annual shipments, marking its largest-ever drop in the region, according to Canalys data. Budget brand Vivo captured 17% of the market, followed by Huawei at 16%, while Apple held 15%, underscoring growing competition from domestic manufacturers. Apple experienced contraction in all four quarters, including a steep 25% drop in the final quarter of 2024, as it struggled to maintain its foothold. Apple’s absence of artificial intelligence capabilities in its iPhones, in contrast to domestic competitors, weakened its competitiveness in the Chinese market. Huawei posted a 24% rise in shipments in the fourth quarter, thanks to its new flagship phones featuring locally-made chipsets, regaining its premium market edge. The proliferation of domestic foldable phones and consistent flagship releases from Huawei have intensified competition for Apple in high-price segments. Apple launched a four-day promotion in January, offering up to $68.50 off iPhone 16 models, with e-commerce giants like Alibaba providing additional discounts. Xiaomi recorded the strongest growth in the fourth quarter, with a 29% increase in shipments, followed by Oppo (18%) and Vivo (14%). Overall smartphone shipments in China rose by 4% in 2024 to 285 million units, reflecting a rebound in the domestic market. Canalys analysts highlight challenges for Apple, including Huawei’s resurgence, innovation from domestic brands, and diminishing consumer loyalty.
