Caption: SPF: Why it is the most important step in your skincare routine. One of the most important parts of your skincare routine is sun protection, even when it's not sunny. Wearing SPF (sun protection factor) every day is essential to protect your skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can lead to sunburn, premature ageing and an increased risk of skin cancer. Kimberly Medd, Head of Clinic at Face The Future, explains why SPF is the proven beauty step that will future-proof your skin. ”SPF is the one non-negotiable skincare step that everyone should be incorporating into their regime regardless of age, skin type or skin colour," she begins, noting that no one is completely safe from sun damage without daily SPF use. Kimberly then goes on to dispel the notion that those living in the U.K. don't need to wear SPF due to the often overcast climate. ”There are two types of sun rays that can damage your skin in different ways. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn while UVA rays can lead to premature ageing and the development of skin cancer.” While the risk of sunburn is low for most of the year in the U.K., you are still exposed to UVA rays, which are the "main aggressor" we should be protecting our skin from. ”To ensure the face is fully protected, 2mg of product should be applied for every cm2 of skin. This roughly equates to a full finger length. Failing to apply enough product can dramatically reduce the protection from your sunscreen," Kimberly warns, adding that sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours. According to the expert, as well as protecting against skin cancer, daily use of SPF has a number of other benefits, including minimising and preventing hyperpigmentation, sun spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and maintaining an even skin tone. ”UV rays damage collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and loss of elasticity, a process called photoageing. Regular use of SPF helps shield these proteins from damage, preserving skin's firmness and slowing visible signs of ageing.” Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
