Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Instagram Ads Linked To Child Abuse Material, BBC Finds
Caption: Instagram Ads Promoting Child Abuse Material Found In India, BBC Says. A BBC investigation says Instagram ran paid advertisements in India promoting child sexual abuse material and directing users to buy it through Telegram. The investigation found ads containing phrases such as “rape video” and “child video,” with links to Telegram channels selling the illegal material for as little as 99 rupees. The BBC said one reported advert was initially deemed not to violate Instagram’s community guidelines before being removed after journalists contacted parent company Meta Platforms. Meta said it removed the ads, suspended the accounts involved and blocked related links after reviewing the BBC’s findings. The company said child exploitation is a “horrific crime” and denied knowingly allowing or promoting such content, adding that millions of suspicious accounts were disabled last year. Telegram said it removed more than 274,000 groups and channels linked to child sexual abuse material in 2026 and uses automated and human moderation to combat illegal content. The BBC has reported the adverts and Telegram channels to Indian authorities, while a former Indian Supreme Court justice said the findings raise serious concerns about platform responsibility.
