Caption: Why you should attempt New Year's fitness resolutions for at least two months. Many of us set New Year's resolutions every year, but not all of us stick to them. According to a YouGov survey, more than 2/3 of Brits ditch their New Year's resolutions within a month. If you have set yourself a fitness goal for this year, make sure to give yourself at least two or three months because that's how long it takes before you start to see noticeable progress. Leon Bolmeer, a fitness expert from Geezers Boxing, explains that you have to be patient as results don't happen overnight. "Seeing results from a workout routine takes time, and how long it takes depends on several factors, including your fitness level, training type, and lifestyle habits like nutrition and sleep," he notes. "Beginners often notice progress sooner, typically within two to four weeks, as their bodies adapt to new challenges. For those with more experience, changes might take four to six weeks or longer." However, you may notice other positive changes in your body, such as an increase in your energy level and mood, before you see any physical results. "Many people experience improvements in energy, mood, and sleep within the first few weeks of starting a fitness routine," Leon shares, adding that these milestones can make a "big difference" to your overall health and wellbeing. "One of the first signs of progress when you start a workout is how your body learns to move more efficiently," he continues. "Your body learns how to move more efficiently, improving strength, coordination, and performance. These 'hidden gains' might not be visible but are vital in building a strong foundation for continued growth.” The fitness professional recommends starting off slowly and gradually building to a consistent routine aiming for three to five hours of exercise per week alongside a healthy diet and good sleep habits. "Combining regular exercise with proper nutrition, quality sleep, and manageable goals creates a foundation for long-term success," he states. "Progress might feel slow at times, but is still a constant progression towards a healthier, stronger version of yourself."
