Caption: Ex-Abercrombie CEO’s Competency Challenged Amid Dementia Claims in Sex Trafficking Case. Mike Jeffries, the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch, may be unable to face federal sex trafficking charges due to alleged dementia, his defense team claims, Sky News report. Defense lawyers stated that a neuropsychologist's October assessment suggests Jeffries, 80, has dementia with behavioral disturbance, Alzheimer’s disease, and Lewy body dementia. Jeffries reportedly suffers from memory loss, slowness in processing, and confusion, impairing his ability to assist in his legal defense, the defense argued. Jeffries pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution. He remains out on $10 million bail after an indictment in October. Prosecutors allege Jeffries and accomplices coerced 15 men into drug-fueled sex parties through "force, fraud, and coercion" from 2008 to 2015. The indictment claims men were subjected to wearing costumes, taking muscle relaxants, using sex toys, and receiving painful penile injections during these parties. The alleged events took place at Jeffries’ Hamptons home and at luxury hotels in locations such as England, France, Italy, Morocco, and St. Barts. Prosecutors state that participants were made to sign non-disclosure agreements before attending the parties. A June competency hearing has been scheduled to determine if Jeffries is fit to stand trial, with experts set to testify. The case raises questions about balancing justice for alleged victims with the rights of defendants who may lack the mental capacity to stand trial.
