Caption: Cambridge Chancellor Condemns ‘Racist Feeding Frenzy’ Over Dead Academic Jason Arday. The head of the University of Cambridge has condemned what he called a “racist feeding frenzy” surrounding Black academic Jason Arday, who was found dead days after resigning from the university amid plagiarism allegations. Cambridge Chancellor Lord Chris Smith said allegations of academic misconduct must be investigated rigorously, but argued that this should not lead to a racially charged campaign. Arday, 41, became Cambridge’s youngest Black professor in 2023 but resigned on August 5 after claims emerged that parts of his doctoral thesis had been plagiarised. His death has intensified a debate over whether he was subjected to disproportionate media scrutiny because of his race. Arday’s family has blamed a “misinformation campaign” for the pressure he faced, while critics of the University say stronger checks should have been carried out before his appointment. Cambridge had initially defended Arday against what it described as a racially motivated campaign, but later announced an investigation. The controversy has also prompted a petition calling for an inquiry into the media coverage, while anti-racism campaigners have organised vigils in his memory.
