Caption: Ukrainian-American stars Liev Schreiber and Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hütz, met in the legendary Ukrainian restaurant Veselka in New York to bake Easter bread (paska) this year. Their Easter bread is made from flour that comes from a demined field in the liberated Kharkiv region. The wheat this paska was made of was salvaged by a local farmer from the northern part of the region that endured constant shelling. The flour produced was exported to the United States, and partly used to bake this bread. “Ukraine is the breadbasket of the world. And what that means is that before the war, Ukraine was one of the top global suppliers of flour, supplying to almost 60 countries. And if they're not able to produce that flour, it's not only a problem for Ukraine ,” says Schreiber. The UNITED24 fundraising platform will raffle 10 packs of it among those who donate $10 or more towards helping demine Ukrainian land. The Hollywood star adds: “So what UNITED24 has decided to do is to create a fundraiser particularly around demining. There are so many reasons why demining is important in terms of getting the people back up on their feet, getting the country working again, making sure that people are safe, children playing in fields. So this is a really, really, really big issue. If you can help, please do. And if you can't help, just talk about it.” The baking workshop was held as part of Soul of Soil 2.0, a project by the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine, to raise awareness about the mine problem and the true cost of Ukrainian bread. Today, 139,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian land are potentially mined, which makes humanitarian demining crucial for Ukraine. 35,000 square kilometers have already been returned to productive use. To help Ukrainian sappers clear the country from explosive ordnance, UNITED24 launched the Humanitarian Demining program, engaging its ambassadors and donors worldwide in fundraising.
