Caption: Thousands Protest in Spain After 87-Year-Old Woman Evicted From Madrid Home. Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Spain to protest against the eviction of an 87-year-old woman from the Madrid home where she had lived for more than seven decades. The demonstrations have made Maricarmen’s case a symbol of growing anger over rising rents, housing shortages and the difficulties faced by long-term tenants. Maricarmen had lived in the 92-square-metre apartment in Madrid’s Retiro district since 1956, under an old rental contract that initially kept her monthly rent at around €500. After the building was bought by an investment company in 2018, her rent was eventually raised to €1,650 a month, more than her pension of about €1,350. Several previous attempts to evict her were unsuccessful, but a court ultimately ruled that the owner could recover possession of the property. When bailiffs arrived to carry out the eviction, protesters gathered outside the building and clashed with police, who used force to clear the area. The eviction has prompted further demonstrations in Madrid and other Spanish cities, with campaigners calling for greater protection for tenants amid financial pressure on renters. The protests come as Spain faces a broader housing crisis, with soaring rents and a shortage of affordable homes making access to housing an increasingly contentious issue.
