The two ministers met at the UN General Assembly in New York, where Miliband raised alleged threats linked to Iranian groups. British intelligence reportedly concluded that Iran or its proxies were involved in an arson attack on Jewish community ambulances in London in March. Miliband also urged Iran to pursue diplomacy and de-escalation in its conflict with the United States and stressed the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway, normally used for around a fifth of global oil and gas shipments, has been effectively closed since Iran responded to U.S. and Israeli attacks in February. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told the UN that any agreement must end restrictions preventing Iranian ships from using the Strait of Hormuz. Miliband also raised the detention of British couple Lindsay and Craig Foreman, who were sentenced to 10 years in prison on espionage charges they deny. The foreign secretary called for the couple's immediate release and said their welfare remained a priority for the British government.
