Caption: EU Considers Sperm Donor Limit to Prevent Accidental Incest and Genetic Risks. Eight EU countries are pushing for a cap on the number of children conceived from a single sperm donor to prevent accidental incest. The growing use of assisted reproduction in Europe has raised concerns about the psychological and genetic risks for donor-conceived children. Many EU countries already have national limits on how many children can be conceived from a single donor, but cross-border donations lack regulation. Sweden, backed by seven other countries including Belgium, is leading efforts to establish an international sperm donor limit. The proposed limit aims to prevent situations where genetic half-siblings unknowingly start families, reducing risks of hereditary diseases. Current cross-border donation practices are increasing the number of children fathered by one donor in multiple countries. A Swedish research officer highlighted a case where one donor fathered 67 children, 10 of whom developed cancer due to a rare gene. Sweden’s National Council on Medical Ethics began investigating the issue in 2023, after reports of sperm being sold abroad. Many countries struggle to recruit local sperm donors, leading to reliance on international cryobanks and increasing the risks. EU ministers will discuss the proposed limit on sperm donations in hopes of protecting future generations from the effects of accidental incest and genetic health issues.
