Caption: Matcha: Is it causing an iron deficiency? Duncan Reid, Senior Pharmacist and Head of Patient Safety at Pharmacy2U, has explained whether you should be concerned. "Matcha generally contains 19-44mg of caffeine per gram, meaning a typical 2-4 gram serving can range from 38mg to 176mg of caffeine.” "In comparison, coffee beans contain around 10-12mg of caffeine per gram, with an average 8-ounce cup of coffee providing roughly 100mg. This means that depending on how concentrated your matcha is, it could actually have more caffeine than a standard cup of coffee.” If you are concerned about iron deficiency, there are a number of signs to look out for. ”It's important to look out for symptoms of iron deficiency which includes persistent fatigue and weakness, pale or yellowish skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, cold hands and feet, and even includes unusual cravings for non-food items.” Although matcha may contain more caffeine than you thought, you don't have to give it up altogether. "While caffeine lovers don't need to ditch their favourite drinks, understanding their effects on iron absorption can help ensure a balanced diet without compromising essential nutrient intake.” He goes on to reassure that "occasional caffeine consumption" won't directly cause iron deficiency, but if you experience any symptoms, you shouldn't ignore them.
