Caption: Islamist Motive Suspected in Austria Stabbing Attack. A 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker suspected of stabbing five people in Villach, Austria, is believed to be a follower of Islamic State (IS), authorities said Sunday. The attack killed a 14-year-old boy and injured five others. Police arrested the suspect shortly after the incident. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stated that the suspect was rapidly radicalized online, and an IS flag was found in his apartment. Authorities revealed that the suspect had sworn an oath of allegiance to IS before carrying out the attack. The Villach stabbings follow an August plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, foiled after a teenager pledged loyalty to IS. The attack also came days after an Afghan national drove into a crowd in Munich, killing two people and injuring dozens. The violence comes amid political turmoil in Austria, where the far-right Freedom Party (FPO) failed to form a coalition government after winning September’s parliamentary election. Centrist parties are now in discussions about forming a government, while the president considers calling a snap election. The FPO, known for its strong stance on immigration, quickly seized on the attack, renewing calls for deportations to Syria and Afghanistan. “No migrant would commit murder or other crimes if they were not in Austria in the first place,” said FPO leader Herbert Kickl.
