Caption: Japan Records More Than 100,000 People Aged 100 or Over. Japan's number of people aged 100 or over has surpassed 100,000 for the first time, according to the country's Health Ministry. A total of 107,677 centenarians now live in Japan, an increase of 7,914 from the previous year. Health Minister Kenichiro Ueno attributed the rise partly to advances in medical technology, saying more people are living longer and remaining active. The number of centenarians has increased every year for 56 consecutive years, rising from just 153 when records began in 1963. Women account for about 88% of Japan's centenarians, while life expectancy stands at around 87 years for women and 81 for men. The milestone comes as Japan faces a rapidly ageing and shrinking population, driven by persistently low birth rates and comparatively low immigration. The number of Japanese citizens fell below 120 million at the start of the year, after the population declined by around 917,000 in just 12 months. The demographic shift is putting growing pressure on Japan's social-security system and public finances, already burdened by the highest level of national debt among industrialised countries.
