French police are becoming more effective at preventing small boats from crossing the English Channel, according to the U.K. Home Office. French authorities reportedly intercepted 185 attempted crossings involving 4,300 migrants across four separate weeks this summer. They have also stopped 12 boats at sea using new interception techniques, including three during the past two weeks. The Home Office said 61% of small boats have been intercepted since a new U.K.-France agreement was reached three months ago. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the U.K.-France deal was already having a "real impact" on Channel crossings. Overall crossings are down around 40% compared with last year, although thousands of migrants have still reached Britain by small boat. The Conservatives disputed the government's assessment, arguing that Channel crossing preventions had fallen significantly over the past year. Reform UK has said that if it were in power, it would intercept boats crossing the Channel and return migrants to French ports, even without France's agreement.
