Caption: Russell Brand fails in bid to delay U.S. civil sexual assualt case. The British comedian, 49, last week sought a delay in the U.S. case, suggesting there could be a potential "overlap" with the British criminal case and that civil proceedings should be postponed, according to documents seen by The Sun on Sunday. However, Judge Shlomo Hagler of the New York Supreme Court rejected the request and it was subsequently withdrawn. In the U.K., Metropolitan Police officers confirmed on Friday that Brand had been charged with rape, indecent assault, oral rape and two counts of sexual assault. A first court appearance is scheduled for 2 May. Brand denies all of the allegations against him. Brand’s lawyers also told the New York court that he fears a criminal investigation in the U.S. in addition to the one he faces in the U.K. The Get Him to the Greek star's lawyer, Mark Cuccaro, said his client had a, "reasonable belief criminal prosecution is possible in the US based on allegations tantamount to criminal sexual misconduct occurring in the US, of which he has been falsely accused both by this civil plaintiff and several others through the media”. The New York lawsuit was filed in 2023 by an extra on Brand's 2010 romantic comedy Arthur. The alleged victim, named only as Jane Doe, accused the embattled star of exposing himself to cast members and sexually assaulting her in a lavatory on set. Brand and his co-defendant, Warner Bros, deny the allegations against them. Police in Los Angeles, where Arthur was filmed, told The Sun on Sunday they do not currently have an open investigation into the comedian and actor.
