Caption: Finland Joins France-Led Nuclear Deterrence Plan for Europe. Finland has joined France’s initiative to extend its nuclear deterrence to European allies, as European countries seek to strengthen their security amid uncertainty over the US commitment to Europe. The Forward Nuclear Deterrence Initiative, announced by President Macron in March, aims to give European countries a greater role in his nuclear strategy without creating a shared nuclear arsenal. France would retain sole authority over its nuclear weapons, while participants could take part in exercises and potentially host French nuclear-capable aircraft on a temporary basis. Finnish President Alexander Stubb said the initiative would strengthen European security and complement, rather than replace, NATO’s existing nuclear deterrence arrangements. Finland has also made clear that it does not intend to station nuclear weapons on its territory during peacetime. Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen described joining the initiative as a natural step, following Norway, Sweden and Denmark, which had already signed up. Finland’s participation brings the total number of European countries involved in the French initiative to 10, including Germany and the UK.
