Here's everything you need to know about the condition. ”Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis and typically manifests itself as a sudden and severe pain in a joint, often the big toe, but can also include the knees, elbows, wrists and fingers," says Superdrug's Pharmacy Superintendent Niamh McMillan, adding that gout can also lead to swollen, red joints and a limited range of motion. There are several factors that can increase your risk of developing gout, including genetics, medical conditions, obesity and a diet high in purine-rich foods such as alcohol and red meat. ”These foods can raise the uric acid levels in the body which then accumulate in the bloodstream," the expert explains. "This can lead to crystals forming around your joints which causes the pain associated with gout.” Niamh has identified four ways to help prevent the condition, which affects one in 40 people in the U.K. Stay hydrated "Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water every day to stay hydrated and help flush the uric acid out of your body," Niamh advises. "Avoid sugary drinks and excessive alcohol, which can exacerbate gout.” Eat a balanced diet "Limit foods high in purines such as red meat, sardines and anchovies and instead focus on a diet rich in fruit, vegetables and whole grains which can help manage uric acid levels," the pharmacist recommends. Maintain a healthy weight Obesity can increase your risk of developing gout, so it is important to keep an eye on your weight. ”Losing excess weight can help lower uric acid levels and also help to reduce the strain on joints," Niamh explains. "Aim for gradual weight loss through a balanced diet and regular exercise.” Exercise regularly Last but not least, exercise is key when it comes to joint health and maintaining a healthy weight. ”Regular physical activity can help maintain a healthy weight and support joint health," Niamh shares. "Avoid high-impact exercises during a gout flare-up, in order to avoid further joint strain." Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
