Caption: Low Doses of CBD Could Harm Liver, New FDA Study Shows. A new clinical trial raises concerns about the safety of low doses of cannabidiol (CBD), even as CBD products continue to grow in popularity. The study, conducted by the FDA's Division of Applied Regulatory Science, tested the impact of low-dose CBD on liver function in a group of healthy adults. Participants were given a typical consumer dose of CBD — 5 mg per kilogram of body weight — for four weeks. While most participants experienced no issues, 5% showed significantly elevated liver enzyme levels, a sign of potential liver damage. Women were found to be more vulnerable than men. The enzyme levels returned to normal after stopping CBD. Seven participants withdrew from the study due to potential signs of drug-induced liver injury. Amir Englund, a researcher from King’s College London, warns that this finding is significant. He says many consumers may not be aware of the potential risks of liver damage from CBD, assuming it to be completely harmless.
