Red buses and black cabs have long been as much a part of London's Oxford Street as crowds of tourists and large department stores but from 26 October, cars, buses and taxis are no longer allowed on part of the famous shopping street. Bicycles are also banned from a stretch of almost one kilometre between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. Previously, traffic was banned from Monday to Saturday between 7am and 7pm, with exceptions for buses and taxis, but the route is now completely closed. Vehicles can cross the new zone at junctions, while more than 50 trees will be planted and benches and chairs installed by spring 2027. With around one million pedestrians every day, Oxford Street ranks alongside the Champs-Élysées in Paris and Fifth Avenue in New York as one of the world's most famous shopping streets. However, it has increasingly lost its shine, with empty shops, discount stores and souvenir shops damaging the street's exclusive image in recent years. The redevelopment project, costing around £150 million (€178 million), aims to breathe new life into the shopping street and attract more visitors and jobs. The car-free section is expected to be extended further in the future, with the aim of restoring London's most famous shopping street to its former glory.
