Caption: Measles 'Circulating' in Liverpool Area After Child’s Death, Expert Warns. A child’s death from measles at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool has raised alarm, with local authorities urging increased awareness of the virus. Professor Matthew Ashton, Director of Public Health for Liverpool City Council, emphasized the importance of recognizing measles symptoms and staying protected. Since June, 17 measles cases have been recorded at Alder Hey, prompting concern about the disease’s spread within the community. ”Measles is a really nasty virus," warned Mr. Ashton, emphasizing that anyone not vaccinated is at risk of harm from the virus. David Fothergill, Chairman of the Local Government Association's community wellbeing board, highlighted the urgent need to address falling vaccination rates across the UK. There have been 529 confirmed measles cases in England so far in 2025, with 68% of those cases occurring in children under 10 years old. Vaccination rates in Liverpool are notably low, with less than 74% of the population protected, well below the recommended 95% level for herd immunity. Mr. Ashton attributed the decline in vaccination rates to factors like COVID fatigue, misinformation, and the socioeconomic challenges families face.
