Caption: Hungary’s Magyar Visits Poland In Push To Repair EU Relations. Peter Magyar has begun his first foreign trip since taking office with a high-profile visit to Poland aimed at rebuilding ties with European allies. Magyar is due to meet Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk during the two-day visit, which is being viewed as a symbolic reset after years of tension between Warsaw and Budapest under former Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán. Relations between the two countries deteriorated sharply because of Orbán’s close relationship with Vladimir Putin and disagreements over support for Ukraine. Tusk’s return to power in Poland in 2023 helped restore Warsaw’s ties with Brussels and unlocked billions in frozen EU funds, something Magyar is hoping to achieve for Hungary as well. A Polish government official described the visit as an effort to restore traditionally strong bilateral ties and reopen cooperation on European policy and Ukraine. Magyar said he would travel across Poland by train, joking that the high-speed rail system was built with funding from the “evil Brussels,” a swipe at Orbán’s anti-EU rhetoric. Energy security is expected to be a major topic during the talks, with Hungary seeking to reduce its dependence on Russian energy supplies by 2035. Polish officials are also expected to discuss LNG cooperation, support for Ukraine and the future of the regional Visegrad alliance.
