Caption: Celebrations In Serbia After Vučić Loses Election To Student-Led Movement. Former Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić conceded defeat after preliminary results indicated his Serbian Progressive Party had lost the country's snap parliamentary election. Celebrations erupted across Serbia after Vučić acknowledged that "it is clear that we have lost these elections" at his party's headquarters in Belgrade. The Student List emerged from nearly two years of anti-corruption protests triggered by the Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse, which killed 16 people. Student List lead candidate Ilija Srdanović declared "This will be a free state", as supporters celebrated in the streets of Belgrade and Novi Sad. The movement fielded candidates from across Serbian society, including doctors, academics, actors and sports personalities, for the 250-seat parliament. Its campaign included pledges to remove officials accused of wrongdoing against protesters and reduce political control over public institutions and the state broadcaster. Vučić, who had served two presidential terms, was seeking to return as prime minister after being unable to run for a third term as president.
