Caption: A simple guide to getting your gut health back on track. Many of us neglect our guts over the festive period as we indulge in heavy foods and alcohol, so January is the perfect time to focus on our gut health. Emma Bullock-Lynch, nutritionist at Wassen, shares her top tips to help you beat the post-Christmas bloat and get your gut health back on track. Fibre Incorporating more fibre into your diet can help feed the bacteria in your gut. ”Fibre is found in plant-based foods and when eaten, it helps to keep things moving and nourishes the bacteria within your gut.” "Recent research found that eating 30 plants per week is beneficial for your gut health (this may seem like a lot, but it includes coffee, spices, nuts and seeds as well as fruit and vegetables).” Stay hydrated It is also important to stay hydrated throughout the day. ”Water is essential for digestion and helps prevent constipation. The NHS recommends 6-8 glasses of water a day, the nutritionist insists, adding that keeping a water bottle nearby can help remind you to keep hydrated. Eat mindfully Eating too much food too quickly can damage your gut, so try to slow down. ”Slow down and savour your food, making sure to chew it properly. This allows for better digestion and helps prevent overeating.” Fermented foods Another thing to include in your diet is fermented foods, as they can help promote a healthy gut. ”Fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut and kombucha are loaded with gut-friendly probiotics (live bacteria and yeasts) that promote a healthy gut microbiome.” Manage stress Finally, it's important to know that stress can be harmful to your gut. ”Chronic stress can really impact your digestion! Practice relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation.” Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
