Caption: TikTok Refugees Find New Home on Chinese App RedNote as US Ban Nears. With a US TikTok ban looming, many users, calling themselves "TikTok refugees," have migrated to RedNote, a Chinese social media app, making it the most downloaded app on Apple's US App Store this week, BBC News reports. RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu, is a hybrid of TikTok and Instagram, boasting 300 million monthly users, primarily young urban women in China and Taiwan, sharing lifestyle tips on fashion, dating, and more. The Supreme Court is set to decide on a law requiring TikTok to sell its US operations or face a ban by January 19. TikTok has refused to sell, citing free speech protections for its 170 million US users. New US users have been learning how to navigate the app, with over 63,000 posts under the "TikTok refugee" hashtag. Some users are also learning basic Chinese phrases to better engage with the platform. Like TikTok, RedNote faces allegations of censorship, particularly around criticism of the Chinese government. In Taiwan, public officials are restricted from using the app due to security concerns. Chinese users have jokingly called themselves "Chinese spies," referencing US fears about potential data misuse by Chinese platforms. Some users see RedNote as a fresh platform to grow their personal brands. Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
