Caption: Turkey Sends Defensive Support to Saudi Arabia in Fight Against Houthis. Turkey is providing Saudi Arabia with mainly technical and defensive military support as Riyadh steps up its campaign against Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels. The assistance includes military equipment, intelligence sharing, weapons systems, air-defence capabilities, drone operators and logistical support, according to officials. Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement in August, committing the three countries to treat an armed attack against one member as an attack against all. The three countries agreed this week to begin implementing their collective-defence commitments and ensure the rapid deployment of military capabilities to Saudi Arabia. However, Turkey has not deployed combat troops, with the pact still awaiting ratification by the Turkish parliament and current assistance largely being provided on a bilateral basis. The support comes as Saudi-backed Yemeni forces, supported by coalition air strikes, launch a counter-offensive against the Houthis around the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Houthis have recently intensified missile and drone attacks on Saudi targets, including airports and military installations, while also threatening shipping through the Red Sea.
