Caption: Holocaust Survivor and Olympic Legend Agnes Keleti Dies at 103. Agnes Keleti, Holocaust survivor and the oldest living Olympic medalist, has died at 103 in Budapest, following hospitalization for pneumonia on Christmas Day, Sky News reports. Keleti won 10 Olympic gymnastics medals, including five golds, at the 1952 Helsinki Games and the 1956 Melbourne Games, making her one of Hungary’s greatest athletes. Reflecting on her long life at 100, Keleti remarked, "These 100 years felt to me like 60. I live well. And I love life.” Born in 1921 as Agnes Klein, her gymnastics career was halted by World War II and the cancellation of the 1940 and 1944 Olympics. Forced off Hungary’s national gymnastics team in 1941 for being Jewish, Keleti survived by assuming a false identity and working as a maid. Her father and relatives perished at Auschwitz. At 31, she made her Olympic debut in 1952, earning one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals, showcasing her resilience and talent. In 1956, at age 35, Keleti won four gold and two silver medals, becoming the oldest gold medalist in gymnastics history and the most decorated athlete of those Games. The Soviet invasion of Hungary during the 1956 Olympics led Keleti to seek political asylum in Australia before immigrating to Israel in 1957. Keleti devoted decades to training and coaching Israel’s Olympic gymnastics team, significantly contributing to the sport until the 1990s. Keleti’s story as a Holocaust survivor, Olympic champion, and pioneering coach leaves a legacy of unparalleled resilience and determination.
