Caption: Finland Orders Halt To Work On Two Google Data Centres. Finnish authorities have ordered work to stop at two planned Google data centre sites following concerns over the clearance of more than 300 hectares of forest. The projects in Muhos and Kajaani are part of Google's €13 billion investment in Finland, announced less than a month ago as its largest single investment in Europe. Finland’s Supervisory Agency said work at one site had been carried out without a mandatory environmental impact assessment. Preparatory work included removing trees and topsoil, building roads and storage areas, and altering ditches. Google acknowledged it had "fallen short" of its own standards and said it would follow the authorities' guidance. The company behind the projects has been ordered to explain how it intends to proceed, with officials warning that enforcement action could follow if requirements are not met.
