Caption: Two National Guard Soldiers Critically Wounded in Targeted Washington Shooting; Suspect in Custody. Two National Guard members were critically injured Wednesday in a downtown Washington ambush near the White House, officials said while the gunman, identified as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was also shot and taken into custody. Lakanwal, who came to the U.S. under Operation Allies Welcome in 2021 and was granted asylum earlier this year, is believed to have acted alone with authorities investigating the incident as a potential act of terrorism. The attack occurred around 2:15 p.m. ET as the soldiers, part of the West Virginia National Guard, conducted a high-visibility patrol. Following a brief gunfight, other National Guard troops subdued the suspect. Witnesses described chaotic scenes with pedestrians fleeing and soldiers tending to the wounded. President Donald Trump, at his Florida resort during the incident, called the attack "an act of evil, an act of hatred and an act of terror” and announced a review of all Afghans admitted during the Biden administration. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth confirmed the deployment of 500 additional National Guard troops to the city, joining roughly 2,200 already stationed there. Officials continue to investigate the motive, and both injured soldiers remain in critical condition. Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
