Caption: Pope Francis’ Final Journey: Open Coffin, Transfer to St. Peter’s, and Funeral Details Revealed. The Vatican has released the first images of Pope Francis lying in an open wooden coffin at Casa Santa Marta, following his death. A private ceremony was held at the papal residence on Monday, marking the beginning of Pope Francis’ final rites. On Wednesday at 9 a.m. local time, the coffin will be transferred from the Casa Santa Marta residence to St. Peter’s Basilica. Camerlengo Kevin Joseph Farrell will lead a short prayer service before the transfer of the coffin to St. Peter’s Basilica, according to the Vatican. The procession will pass through Piazza Santa Marta, Piazza dei Protomartiri Romani, and the Arch of the Bells before entering St. Peter’s Square. Pope Francis will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica after arriving, where cardinals and the public will be able to pay respects. The funeral of Pope Francis is set to take place on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET) in St. Peter’s Square. Thousands of mourners are expected to gather in St. Peter’s Square, as it has been the site for previous papal funerals. Cardinal Giovanni Battista, Dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside over the funeral Liturgy, leading the final rites. After the funeral service, Pope Francis' body will be taken to Rome’s Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore for burial.
