Caption: Maryland Senator Meets with Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador After Controversial Deportation. Senator Chris Van Hollen met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador, the Maryland man wrongfully deported to the country, following a contentious legal battle. The meeting, which took place Thursday night, was part of Van Hollen’s efforts to secure Abrego Garcia’s release after his wrongful deportation earlier this year. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national and Maryland resident, was mistakenly deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration due to a clerical error. Senator Van Hollen shared a photo of the meeting on X, stating his main goal was to meet with Abrego Garcia and pass on his wife Jennifer’s message of love. El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele confirmed that Abrego Garcia would remain in custody, after being declared healthy, despite Van Hollen's meeting. In a post, President Bukele mocked critics of Abrego Garcia’s incarceration, sarcastically referring to the situation as him “sipping margaritas” with Van Hollen in El Salvador. Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, expressed immense relief, stating her children’s prayers had been answered and the community's efforts were being heard. Earlier in the day, Van Hollen was denied access to CECOT prison to check on Abrego Garcia’s wellbeing, which he argued violated international law regarding detainees' rights. Despite Abrego Garcia not being charged, El Salvador’s state of exception allows the country to bypass constitutional rights, leaving his case in legal limbo. Van Hollen emphasized the need for due process and criticized the Trump administration’s role in the deportation, asserting that no individual should be denied fair treatment under the law.
