Headline: UK Trials Underwater Robot That Can Stop Sabotage With Explosives
Caption: he Royal Navy is trialling an advanced underwater robot with an explosive response to attempts to sabotage key undersea cables and pipelines. Global internet connectivity relies on such undersea cables, with rising global tensions, Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine and a number of suspicious incidents prompting fears of attacks on key infrastructure. The UK's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and industry partners have adapted a commercially available remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to deal with such threats. A Dstl explosives engineer named John said: “This unique capability with its sensors, tools and cameras will give operators a real time ability to deal with these underwater hazards in a safe, effective and efficient way.” Unlike human divers, the ROV can operate at greater depths and remain underwater for extended periods, enhancing both safety and operational endurance. The system has been tested successfully at various locations, including Horsea Island in Portsmouth, Portland Harbour, South Wales, Norway, and other specialist facilities. It can be deployed from either ships or shorelines and is controlled remotely, transmitting video and sonar images to operators above the surface.
