Caption: Confusion Over UK's Electric Vehicle Transition, Ministers Warned. UK drivers are struggling to understand the transition to electric vehicles (EVs), with many confused about upcoming changes, according to a new report from the AA. A survey of over 14,000 AA members found that 7% incorrectly believe the government is banning the sale of used petrol and diesel cars, while a third mistakenly think manual EVs exist. More than 20% of drivers surveyed said they would never consider purchasing an EV, highlighting ongoing concerns about affordability and practicality. In 2024, UK car manufacturers must ensure at least 22% of new cars and 10% of new vans sold are zero-emission, with penalties of £15,000 per vehicle for failing to meet quotas. Battery electric vehicles accounted for 25% of new car sales in February and 21% in January, yet manufacturers warn that the market may not support the required growth without additional incentives. The AA criticized the government’s focus on increasing supply rather than demand, urging ministers to launch a coordinated public awareness campaign to address misconceptions and encourage adoption. Consumer rights advocates argue that high costs, complex choices, and uncertainty are preventing people from making the switch to EVs, calling for better government communication and financial incentives. A Department for Transport spokesperson highlighted the £2.3bn investment into EV infrastructure, incentives for company car buyers, and tax breaks to support the transition. Officials pointed out that used EVs are becoming more affordable, with one in three now available for under £20,000 and 21 brand-new models priced below £30,000. Despite government efforts, experts stress that more needs to be done to make EVs accessible and appealing to all drivers, ensuring a smoother transition toward a zero-emission future.
