Caption: Michelle Williams admits Tonys snub 'stung a little bit’. The former Destiny's Child singer currently stars as Viola Van Horn in the Broadway musical adaptation of the 1992 movie Death Becomes Her. While the show itself received 10 Tony nominations this year, Williams wasn't individually recognised. ”It stung a little bit," she told Variety about the snub. ”But I was like: Girl, you're back on Broadway after you didn't think you ever would be. Who's the winner? I'm still the winner! That fixed me.” Williams explained that she didn't think she would be welcomed back into the Broadway community after she withdrew from the revival of the musical Once On This Island after two weeks to receive treatment for depression in 2018. ”I thought I was a liability. I thought I would never be welcomed back into the theatre community…”, she shared, insisting that it is not lost on her that she is originating a role in a musical for the first time, years after thinking Broadway had turned its back on her. ”I don't take it lightly, or for granted.” Williams, whose previous stage credits include Aida, Chicago and The Color Purple, began her run in Death Becomes Her in November. During her stint, she has been supported by her former bandmates Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland, her actress namesake Michelle Williams and Isabella Rossellini, who played the movie's version of Viola. The 2025 Tony Awards, hosted by Cynthia Erivo, will take place on Monday 9 June at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
