Caption: Why you must remove eye make-up before bedtime. Dr Elizabeth Hawkes, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Oculoplastic Surgeon and Aesthetic Doctor, has explained the dangers of leaving your eye make-up on overnight. ”It is important to clean our eyes, especially if eye make-up is worn. Not removing mascara correctly or using expired make-up can cause acute blepharitis as it can block the eyelid's meibomian glands and reduce the secretion of oils needed on the surface of the eye, causing tears to evaporate too quickly, therefore, be sure to remove it before bed.” Dr Hawkes goes on to explain that you should use different make-up removers for the eyes and face. ”This is because the eyelid skin is different to the rest of the face - thinner, more delicate and more prone to dehydration.” "If you neglect the unique nature of the eyelid when removing eye make-up by being too aggressive or using an inappropriate product, you risk developing chronic eye irritation and ultimately blurred vision.” In addition to fully removing your eye make-up at the end of the day, Dr Hawkes has more tips for keeping your eyes healthy: Keep good eyelid hygiene. Place a warm damp cotton pad onto the closed eye for 1 minute followed by a firm massage to help unclog the meibomian glands twice a day. Take regular screen breaks - follow the 20-20-20 rule, which is looking at something 20 metres away for at least 20 seconds, every 20 minutes. Follow a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help prevent and alleviate dry eyes. See your optometrist once a year for an eye check.
