Caption: EU's Ribera Backs First Woman To Lead United Nations. European Commission Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera has backed calls for a woman to become UN secretary-general for the first time. Ribera said she was "willing to see a woman leading the U.N." as the race to succeed Secretary-General António Guterres gathers pace. Guterres is due to leave office at the end of December after completing his second five-year term, with his successor taking office on January 1, 2027. Four women are among the seven candidates: Rebeca Grynspan, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Ivonne A-Baki and María Fernanda Espinosa. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also backed appointing a woman, saying it would be fair after all nine previous UN secretaries-general were men. The contest comes as President Donald Trump's administration presses the UN for financial and structural reforms amid funding pressures. The Security Council must recommend a candidate with at least nine votes and no veto from its five permanent members before appointment by the General Assembly.
