The move follows manipulated material targeting Meloni, including sexually suggestive AI-generated images that circulated online earlier this year. Meloni previously warned that deepfakes can "deceive, manipulate and target anyone", saying that while she can defend herself, many others cannot. If approved, the trademark could provide additional legal protection against unauthorised uses of the protected recording for specified goods and services. However, trademark protection would not give Meloni blanket control over every AI-generated imitation of her voice or automatically prevent deepfakes. The application covers areas including downloadable multimedia content, cultural activities and the organisation of political events. The EUIPO application remains under examination as concerns grow over the use of generative AI to clone the voices and likenesses of public figures.
