Caption: Kemi Badenoch Says She No Longer Identifies as Nigerian. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch says she no longer identifies as Nigerian and has not renewed her Nigerian passport since the early 2000s. Speaking on Gyles Brandreth’s Rosebud podcast, Badenoch explained that while she is “Nigerian through ancestry” her sense of identity is now firmly British. She said most of her life has been in the UK and she has “never felt the need” to keep her Nigerian passport. Badenoch, who was born in London and grew up in Nigeria and the US, returned to the UK at 16 because of Nigeria’s worsening political and economic situation. She said her parents believed “there was no future” for her there. She recalled never fully feeling she belonged in Nigeria, and that returning to Britain in 1996 “felt like coming home”. Her experiences abroad, she added, shaped her political views, including her rejection of socialism. Badenoch also defended the UK’s record on race, saying she has not experienced “meaningful” prejudice and is quick to challenge accusations of widespread racism.
