Caption: Badenoch Instructs Lawyers Over Wandsworth Council Funding Cuts. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch says lawyers have been instructed to examine a possible challenge against the government after a proposed 94 percent council tax rise in Wandsworth. The Conservative-run south-west London council has blamed changes to the local government funding system, which it says will leave it £84 million a year worse off within three years. Badenoch described the proposed increase as "outrageous" but said the council was not introducing it by choice. Wandsworth currently has one of Britain's lowest council tax rates, with a typical Band D property paying just over £1,000. The planned increase would add £958, with roughly half set by the council and half by the Mayor of London. The government says it is reforming an outdated system to direct funding towards areas with greater need. A final decision on the increase is expected early next year.
