Caption: Police Pay Rise “Barely Treads Water”, Say Officers. Police officers in England and Wales will receive a 4.2% pay rise – but their union says it’s far from enough The Police Federation, which represents more than 145,000 officers, claims the increase is worth little more than “the price of a Big Mac per shift” and will not fix record resignations, rising mental health absences, or soaring assaults on officers. The pay award, slightly above the 4.1% inflation rate, lifts a new constable’s salary to £31,164, while a six‑year constable will earn around £50,000. Chief superintendents will now take home nearly £98,500 and allowances – including London weighting – will also rise. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the pay rise sends “a clear signal of gratitude” to officers who “work day and night to keep communities safe” and the Home Office will provide £120 million to protect police budgets. But police leaders warn that after a decade of real‑terms pay cuts, 4.2% “barely treads water” and does little to solve policing’s growing crisis.
