Caption: Jürgen Klopp Names 44-Man Germany Squad With Several Surprises. Jürgen Klopp presented his first Germany squad at the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt on Thursday morning. The new Germany head coach surprised many with an unusually large squad selection. The selections are divided into two lists, with the players on the first list forming the squad for the opening two matches against the Netherlands and Greece. For the following matches against Serbia and Greece, Klopp plans to field an almost entirely different team. Only goalkeeper Finn Dahmen of FC Augsburg features on both squad lists. Captain Joshua Kimmich leads the first list, while Nick Woltemade, who recently joined Juventus, is included despite a dip in form. A surprise inclusion is 22-year-old Mika Baur, who only joined Celtic from SC Paderborn this summer and has now earned a shock call-up to the Germany squad. Alongside Baur, TSG Hoffenheim’s Bambasé Conté and SV Elversberg’s Felix Keidel can also celebrate their surprise call-ups to the Germany squad. SC Freiburg are among the biggest winners, with Klopp calling up four of their players: Yannik Engelhardt, Philipp Treu, Max Rosenfelder and Derry Scherhant. All four Freiburg players are among the 13 debutants in the squad. Remarkably, the club has more players called up than Borussia Dortmund or RB Leipzig. Eleven World Cup players are missing: following the international retirements of Manuel Neuer and Antonio Rüdiger, stars including Leroy Sané, Maximilian Beier and Oliver Baumann were also left out. Jürgen Klopp expects his squad to report to the team camp in Herzogenaurach on Monday, before Germany face the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24.
