Caption: Eurostar Orders First Double-Decker Trains. Eurostar has announced plans to introduce double-decker trains through the Channel Tunnel for the first time. The cross-channel operator confirmed a €2 billion deal with manufacturer Alstom to buy up to 50 new “Celestia” trains, 30 initially, with an option for 20 more — expanding its fleet by nearly a third. The first six trains are expected to enter service in 2031. Each will be 200 metres long, and when two are coupled together, they’ll create a 400 metre service with around 1,080 seats — making them the first double-decker high-speed trains to run through the tunnel. Eurostar says it will also invest heavily in its London depot to support the expansion, though questions remain over capacity for other operators. Chief executive Gwendoline Cazenave said she was “particularly proud to bring double-decker trains to the UK for the very first time,” adding that they’ll deliver “exceptional comfort” as Eurostar targets 30 million passengers a year.
