Caption: Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty for Man Accused of Killing UnitedHealthcare CEO. US prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York last December. Attorney General Pam Bondi called the shooting a "premeditated, cold-blooded assassination", citing political motivation and public endangerment. Thompson, 50, was shot in the back outside a Manhattan hotel on 4 December, where UnitedHealthcare was hosting an investors' meeting. A nationwide manhunt ended five days later with Mangione's arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He was reportedly carrying a ghost gun, fake ID, passport, and a handwritten manifesto. Mangione is charged in both state and federal court. While state charges could lead to life imprisonment, federal charges make him eligible for capital punishment. He faces 11 state criminal counts, including first-degree murder and terrorism, and federal charges such as interstate stalking resulting in death. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the state charges and has yet to enter a plea on the federal case. He is currently held at MDC Brooklyn. His attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, condemned the death penalty decision as “barbaric” and accused the government of defending a “murderous healthcare industry.” Evidence includes fingerprints found at the scene and surveillance showing Mangione’s ten-day stay in New York using a fake ID before the killing. The case has reignited debate about healthcare inequality, with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warning of rising domestic violent extremism in online rhetoric after the murder.
