Caption: ‘No Means No’: Greenlanders Protest Trump Ambitions Outside New US Consulate. Hundreds of Greenlanders gathered in Nuuk to protest against President Donald Trump’s ambitions for greater US influence over the island. Protesters marched through the capital chanting “Greenland is for Greenlanders” before turning their backs on the newly opened American consulate. The demonstration followed a visit by Trump ally Jeff Landry, who travelled to Greenland without an official invitation. Organiser Aqqalukkuluk Fontain said Greenland’s government had already made clear that the territory “is not for sale”. The new 3,000 sq m US consulate in Nuuk has been nicknamed “Trump Towers” by locals amid tensions over Washington’s interest in the Arctic territory. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen declined to attend the consulate opening ceremony, along with other senior politicians. During his visit, Landry suggested Greenland could achieve a stronger economy as an independent nation, while stressing US strategic interests in the Arctic. The White House said the US remained “optimistic” about strengthening ties with Greenland and addressing American national security concerns in the region.
