Caption: Italy Reports 32 West Nile Virus Cases, Including 2 Deaths, Amid Summer Surge. Italy has confirmed 32 cases of West Nile virus in 2025, including two deaths, primarily in the southern provinces. The majority of cases have been reported in Latina province, located 100 km south of Rome, with the virus spreading across other regions. The virus is mainly transmitted through mosquito bites, with an increase in cases seen during warmer summer months in Southern Europe. The national health institute (ISS) reported the cases in its weekly update, noting that the geographical spread of the virus differs from previous years. Other affected regions include Piedmont, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, and Campania, with two fatalities confirmed so far, in Fondi and Novara. Anna Teresa Palamara from the ISS confirmed that West Nile virus has been endemic in Italy for years, stressing protective measures are in place. While 80% of West Nile infections are asymptomatic, the most severe outcomes are seen in vulnerable populations. Lazio region confirmed 12 new cases of the virus this week, following testing at Rome’s Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases. West Nile virus, first identified in Uganda in 1937, is spread by Culex mosquitoes and wild birds, with no person-to-person transmission.
