Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Budapest Mayor Investigated for Organizing Banned Pride Event

Caption: Budapest Mayor Investigated for Organizing Banned Pride Event. Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony is under investigation by Hungarian police for organizing the city's Pride event in June. Karácsony has been named a suspect in the case and has been asked to appear for questioning next week. The mayor expressed pride in his actions, saying he stands up for freedom despite the potential legal consequences. The Hungarian government passed legislation in March banning public assemblies that “promote or display” LGBTQ+ rights, under the guise of child protection. The law led to the denial of police permits for the Budapest Pride event, which had been scheduled for June 28. Karácsony bypassed the permit issue by organizing the Pride event as a municipal undertaking, which did not require police approval. The 2023 Budapest Pride became the largest in the city’s history, with an estimated 200,000 participants. Despite assurances from police that participants would not be prosecuted, the National Bureau of Investigation continued to probe the event’s organizers. Karácsony has stated that he takes full legal responsibility for the event and is prepared to defend himself in court.
